In my younger, less safety conscience years, I drove a VW Bug, and in the trunk of the bug, (under the bonnet up front, that is), I kept a gallon can of gasoline. "Michael, you're nuts! That's a recipe for a molotov cocktail." "Yeh, yeh," I would respond, "But I didn't want to run out of gas."
Fact was I never used that can to fill my own tank. But I can't tell you how often that dangerous gallon of gas helped other people who had run out of fuel.
Truth is, most of us remain quietly alert for the opportunity to pitch in, to lend assistance, to help other people. If somebody would only ask.
Many, many of you in the Olympia chapter, given the chance to help out, have responded, "Sure, I'm really glad you asked."
- Would you read a story at the Safe Schools Vigil?... "You bet."
- Would you give our visitor a follow up call to see how she is doing?... "Glad to."
- Would you volunteer at the State PFLAG Conference?... "Just let me know."
- We need refreshments... "Sign me up."
- Let's move tables... "I'll give you a hand."
- I'm distressed about my kids... "I'm here to listen."
Thanks to you who have already responded so willingly. And for you who are quietly carrying resources and gifts under your bonnet, quietly waiting.... Be alert. PFLAG affords lots of opportunities to help.
